Malnutrition can include both over and under nutrition and can happen if your child doesn’t get the right amount of energy and nutrients they need and can be especially likely if your child is unwell or has a long-term health condition.1-3
Nutritional screening is a simple but essential part of your child’s routine health check which can assess whether they are getting all the important nutrients, vitamins and minerals they need to grow well and stay healthy. It also provides a way to check if your child is growing in line with their developmental milestones.
Your child’s healthcare professional might conduct these check-ups in many different ways; from asking questions about your child’s eating habits, general health, growth and development, to measuring their mid-upper arm circumference.
By conducting these check-ups and assessing any signs that your child might need additional support to get the nutrients, vitamins and minerals they need, your child’s healthcare professional can act early if your child is at risk of disease-related malnutrition to help them to continue to grow and develop.
Pedi R-MAPP, which stands for ‘Paediatric Remote Malnutrition Application’, is a nutritional awareness tool which your child’s healthcare professional may use during your child’s appointment. You will be asked questions about your child’s overall health, eating habits, growth and weight. This will help your child’s healthcare professional assess if there are any nutritional concerns and what the next steps are in your child’s treatment plan.
They may use the Pedi R-MAPP tool at every appointment as this can be helpful to monitor your child’s improvement, to ensure they continue to grow and develop.
STAMP, which stands for ‘Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Paediatrics’, is used in children who have been admitted to hospital.
If your child is admitted to hospital, their healthcare professional may use the STAMP screening tool to assess whether their health condition might mean they are at risk of disease-related malnutrition.
They may also use it to understand your child’s eating patterns whilst in hospital and keep an eye on their weight and height so that they can recommend extra help, should your child need it, to help give them the energy, vitamins and minerals they need to support their ongoing health journey.
Sometimes, your child’s healthcare professional might measure your child’s mid-upper arm circumference with a special measuring tape called a MUAC (mid-upper arm circumference) tape. Tracking changes in this measurement over time can help determine if your child’s growth is on track and help their healthcare professional make recommendations for extra nutritional support if your child needs it.
The MUAC tape measure can be particularly helpful if your child has a physical disability which may make it difficult to weigh them or take their height measurement.
