COMPARISON OF THE CONSISTENCY OF ORAL NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS (ONS) AGAINST THE INTERNATIONAL DYSPHAGIA DIET STANDARDISATION INITIATIVE ('IDDSI") FRAMEWORK1
The IDDSI Framework consists of a succession of eight levels (0-7), where drinks are measured as levels 0-4 and food as levels 3-7. Level 7 is further split into 2 levels to define easy to chew and regular foods. The IDDSI Framework provides a common terminology to describe ood textures and drink thickness.
Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) from Abbott's nutrition business are not specifically designed for patients with dysphagia. However, in response to customer queries, Abbott engaged with the School of Agriculture & Food Sciences at the University of Queensland to conduct independant IDDSI testing on a range of Abbott's oral nutritional supplements.
The results of the testing is to be used by healthcare professionals as a guide. The suitability of products for individual patients with dysphagia is a clinical decision based on the healthcare professional's clinical judgement.
The liquid oral nutritional supplement drinks were evaluated using the gravity flow test or slip test with a 10 mL syringe.

In a few cases, if the product lays near the borderline between IDDSI levels, the lower level has been published.
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION. It is the healthcare professional's responsibility to decide on the suitability of the ONS for their patients. The guide is based on the specific type of sringe used, ambient temperature and the time of testing and specific batch tested. We understand that there may be some variations in results while testing, potentially due to the methodology and/or equipment used, as well as the temperature of the products. Therefore, the ultimate decision regarding suitability of the ONS is the healthcare professional's responsibility.
